No. 21
1901 No. 21 Gustav Whitehead.
Possibly the most controversial Aircraft in History, first flew in 1901 and reported on by over 500 newspapers, two years before the Wright Brothers claim to have been the first, using their power and influence to successfully discredit and cover up Gustav's momentous first flight. Sadly due to the contract between the Wright brothers and the Smithsonian Institute, Gustav has never been given the credit he duly deserved and was forced into poverty from which he never recovered.
Even to this day controversy remains, with divisions amongst the aviation community and Gustav being eviscerated from educational History, most believe that that infamous flight at Kittyhawk in 1903 was the first, evidenced by a photograph of the Wright Flyer in flight in 1906.
Despite this he is credited with this feat in Conneticut where a statue was erected in Bridgeport (now closed to the public) and also a museum in Leutershausen, in Bayern (the birthplace of Gustav).
This model was made to test the theory using Xplanes advanced physics algorythms and proves in the sim at least that it could fly, real life replicas have also been made in the past which also proved that No. 21 really could fly.
The debate continues.
